Founded in 2005, the Avan Ishkhan Partnership's mission is to restore the historic district of Shushi. It was created by a group regularly visiting Artsakh, who later attended a charity event organized in the United States.

The town of Shushi is located on a plateau in the heart of Artsakh, ten kilometres from the capital of Stepanakert. Thanks to its geographical position, this plateau has always played an important strategic role. Shushi quickly developed while becoming one of the intellectual centres of the Caucasus in the 19th century. Countless political thinkers and the cultural elite of the Caucasian Armenians were trained there. The magnificent Cathedral of the Holy Savior (1868 - 1887) dominates the main square of the city. During its construction, it was the cathedral of Etchmiadzin which was taken as a model (the floor plan is the cross with four projecting apses). It is one of the largest churches of Artsakh. On the territory of the town of Shushi, various potteries of the XIV-XIII BC have been found, which testifies to the existence of a fortress. The city served as a defensive fortification, which was later fortified with a defensive wall. In this area, there were also ancient cemeteries with traditional Armenian stone crosses dating back to the 9th-12th centuries. Since 1820, Shushi is considered a major Armenian cultural centre; the city has five printing companies that publish more than 150 books. Shushi is currently considered a historic sanctuary in full development.
