The climate in Armenia is very diverse. The country is located in the northern part of the subtropical zone, although the subtropical climate can only be witnessed in the southern part of Armenia (for example in Meghri). In other regions the climate is dry, continental, mostly with cold winters and hot summers. Since Armenia is a mountainous country, the difference in altitude has an influence on the temperature fluctuations in the country. One of the country's great advantages is the sun, that can be enjoyed year-round, this is why Armenia is often called the Country of Sun.
Depending on the season the temperature can vary considerably. In summer it is generally hot, and for example, can rise to 40-45 ° C in the Ararat Valley.
In winter, the temperature may fall to -5 °C in Yerevan and even colder in the Ararat Valley (-30 ° C) and in the Arpi Lake (-46 ° C).
In summer it is recommended to wear light clothes, however you should also have warm clothes with you. In winter you should dress very warm.
More than 90% of Armenia is located at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. This fact describes the characteristics of the climate. As a result, the average temperature in Armenia, as in other mountainous countries, drops by one degree every 200 meters.
The annual rainfall depends on the height of the area: 200-800 mm on average. The first rainy season in Armenia lasts from spring to early summer. In the months of October and November you can experience the second rainy season. In winter, there is a lot of snow in the mountainous areas (up to 100-150 mm) that stays on top of the mountains all year long.
The best travel time to the beautiful, mountainous country of Armenia is from April to October. For those who prefer winter holidays, the country also has something to offer. Winter sports enthusiasts are welcome to visit the Armenian ski resort Tsaghkadzor. It is located about 1800 meters above sea level at the foot of the 2821 meter high mountain Teghenis.
In summer you can enjoy the swimming in Lake Sevan, which is the largest freshwater lake in the Caucasus. This lake is also called "the blue pearl of Armenia".
The climate makes Armenia an ideal tourist destination. Everyone can find something beautiful and interesting in every season.
