Villa Kars
Villa Kars is the first boutique hotel in the second largest city of Armenia, Gyumri. It is located in the historic old town. It is built in the style of the "beautiful Armenian era" and is a mix of ancient and modern architecture. The antique style and architectural details combine with the comfort of the 21st century.
Gyumri is located in the west of the country, near the border with Turkey, at about 1592 meters above sea level. The city is about 125 km northwest of Yerevan. The city has about 130,000 inhabitants that speak a local dialect. Under the Russian Empire, the city bore the name Alexandrapol from 1840 to 1924, Leninakan from 1924 to 1991 and Kumayri (ancient name of Gyumri) from 1991 to 1992. Gumri was destroyed by the earthquake of December 7, 1988, when 25,000 people lost their lives. The nearby town of Spitak and the surrounding villages have been completely destroyed. The historic district of Gyumri consists of 1500 buildings dating back to the end of the 18th century, most of which was built between the mid and late 19th century in the style of the "beautiful Armenian era". This last point makes Gyumri the symbol of craftsmen and merchants. A walk in old Gyumri is like a walk in a 19th-century open-air museum, when the city was the undisputed capital of Armenian culture in this region. The city has many sights, most of which can be uncovered near Liberty Square and in the old town. There are beautiful townhouses with unique colourful facades that have survived the earthquake and have been classified as historic monuments. There are also many houses that were built under the influence of Russian classicism. Today these buildings are mostly schools or public institutions. They are built of black tuff. There are 6 Armenian churches in Gyumri, including the largest church of the Holy Savior. It is located in the southern part of the main square. Another tourist attraction is the Museum of Popular Architecture and Urban Life. Many famous Armenians were born, lived and studied in Gyumri. Gyumri is known as the cultural capital of Armenia.
