The town of Tsaghkadzor (Valley of Flowers) is a tourist town, a spa, leisure, and sports centre. In 1033, the famous Grigor Magistros of the princely family Pahlavuni founded the monastery of Kecharis, beginning the first construction of the main church dedicated to St. Grigor Lusavorich (Grigor the Illuminator). Afterwards, he built Surb Nshan Church in 1051. From the 13th to the 14th century, Tsaghkadzor took a new impetus under the Zakarid princes. According to historical sources, the monastic complex of Kecharis was still in good condition in the 17th century. But in 1828, a powerful earthquake damaged the dome of the churches. In the 20th century, the monastery was completely renovated. Before the Soviet era, Tsaghkadzor was an important spa centre inhabited mainly by Russians. In Soviet times, the town had up to 30 pioneer camps and convalescent homes. The main sports centre of the USSR was built in 1967 and the cable car in 1969, thanks to the latter the city became very popular. The cable car is 1.4 km long, 19-20 minutes long and has a maximum altitude of 2234m and was completely renovated in 2007 by the Italian-Swiss company. Skiers take the cable car and then go down the mountain.
