The monastery was built about forty years later after the construction of the Sanahin Monastery. Under the rule of the Bagratids, Haghpat was one of the most significant spiritual and cultural centers of the country.

In his movie “The Color of Pomegarantes’’ the impressive and imaginative Sergey Parajanov tells the story of minstrel Sayat Nova, who found refuge in Haghpat Monastery in the 18th century.
The monastery was also famous for its library. Valuable book collections were embedded into the floor and sealed in the niche with clay.
