Havuts Tar

What today is a field of ruins was once an impressive monastery. Havuts Tar is located in the canyon of the river Goght.

A beautiful trail leads from the Garni Temple to the monastery. The largest part of the monastery complex dates from the 12th and 14th C. At the beginning of the 18th century, the monastery complex was rebuilt by the Catholicos Astvatsatur. It was destroyed by the devastating earthquake in 1679. The monastery enclosure contains a rich collection of inscriptions, bas-reliefs and chambers with vaulted ceilings.
