Saint Gayane Church

It houses the grave of St.Gayane, an abbess of a female monastery. Upon the order of Armenian King Tiridates III, Abbes Gayane and many other nuns were tortured and martyred. St. Gayane's grave stone is still under the main altar.
The design of the church has remained unchanged despite renovations after the collapse of the church roof in 1653. The dome was fortunately not damaged. In 2000, Saint Gayane Church was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites along with other historical churches of Vagharshapat, such as St. Hripsime Church and St. Etchmiadzin Cathedral. This church is an example of a three-nave domed basilica type.
