Amberd

On the slopes of Aragats is located the impregnable fortress of Amberd, a landmark of medieval Armenian.

It dates back to the 11th -13th C. The royal castle is a two-story building with grand staircase. The castle is surrounded by defiant reinforced walls with towers. The thermal baths constructed in the 13th C. are located outside of the castle.

The church built from tuff stones, located in the immediate vicinity was built by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni in 1026.

The church is regarded as an example of dome arch building. The exterior architecture is simple and expressive. The dome has the shape of a half-opened umbrella.
