Shoushi

The city of Shoushi is located on a plateau in the heart of Artsakh, 10 km away from the capital Stepanakert. Thanks to its geographical position, this plateau has always served of strategic importance.

Shoushi developed rapidly. Already in the 19th C. it was one of the intellectual centers of Armenia. Among the Caucasian Armenians, many political thinkers and cultural elite were educated there.

The magnificent Cathedral of Christ the Holy Savior draws attention in the city’s main square. The Etchmiadzin Cathedral served as a model for its construction (The ground plan of the church builds the cross with four protruding apses.) It is one of the biggest churches of Artsakh.
