Gyumri

Gyumri is a city of art and culture, tradition, hospitality, humor and indomitable zest for life, all under one roof – the roof of Gyumri. Gyumri is the second biggest city of Armenia (after Yerevan) and the capital of the Shirak Province.

Known by the name Kumairi, Gyumri first developed in the 19th century. In 1837, while under Russian-tsarist rule the city was renamed into Alexandrapol. During the Soviet era, more precisely in 1924 Gyumri received the name Leninakan. The city’s original name was restored after Armenia gained independence in 1991.

The city suffered severe damages during the disastrous earthquake in 1988. But the city has courageously gotten back on its feet.

Gyumri is the hometown to many famous writers and artists. Due to their valuable works Gyumri has become even more popular.

Still today, the museums and craftsmen’s lifestyle enchant our visitors again and again!
