The monastery lies on the right edge of the imposing Khasach gorge and is surrounded by powerful walls. The river of Khasach flows through the gorge.

Hovhannavank was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1679. That is why this period is referred to as the monastery’s second revival.

However, the earthquake of 1918 completely destroyed the drum and the south façade of the church. The destroyed parts are now being restored.
