Odzun is one of the biggest and richest villages of Armenia. The church was built by the Catholicos, Hovhannes Odznetsi (717-728), in his home village in the north of Armenia.

Due to its extraordinary outline, richness and magnificence of construction forms, the church holds a special place among Armenian domed basilicas. On its northern and southern sides, the church possesses unusual arcaded cloisters and the west cloister has a blind wall with an arched entrance in the middle.
